Cougars Clinch Crucial Win at Westside Bowl
October 28, 2019
For a moment, it felt like the Cougars had lost their steam. Cheers went silent as the crowd began to worry.
The emotions from the 2019 Blackout Game were everything but calm. Like rolling waves, the feels came in swells.
The Cougars are 1-2 in district play. After a momentous high from their rivalrous win against the T-Birds, the Cougars have fallen to a new low after losing against Montwood on Oct. 24, 36-16.
The first four games of the year proved successful for the Cougars, taking out out of town teams like Rio Rancho Cleveland, Midland and Permian-Odessa.
Coming into district play the Cougars felt they were strong.
“If I’m being honest, I can point all of the success we’re having to our chemistry and DAWG mentality,” Senior Left Guard Issac Pena said.
This mentality is clear on the field.
Thus far they have scored a total of 302 points against the eight rivals they have come up against with only 143 points scored against them.
Although the team has faced setbacks, the boys are still positive they can overcome their setbacks through their unity.
“We play great together as a unit,” Apsey said. “Our defense has come together great.
Senior runningback Erwin Sutton was named game MVP at the Westside Bowl, scoring two touchdowns with a total of 181 yards.
Sutton feels the same as his teammates.
“It’s our chemistry,” Sutton said “We have goals that we want to accomplish this year.”
According to Pena, the team all still wants the same thing, a win.
“Every one of us steps onto the field with bad intentions and only one thing on our minds,” Pena said. “…walking out of the stadium with a dub.”
