Sade Adu’s new song in 14 years will be featured on Red Hot’s TRAИƧA is an homage dedicated to her trans son, Izaak Theo Adu. The album will celebrate the journeys and struggles of trans people and has 46 tracks which stretch over three and a half hours. Sade is featured alongside artists such as André 3000, Sam Smith, and other artists. It will be released November 22nd.
The original band Sade (pronounced SHA-DEY) was created in London, 1982, formed from Pride, featuring Stuart Matthewman (saxophone), Paul Denman (bass), Sade Adu, (lead singer) and Paul Anthony Cooke. (drums). Sade was extremely popular in the 80s and earlier 90s, being inspired by American Soul music, such as Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, and admired the audience that the Jackson Five garnered.
Some well-known songs include “Smooth Operator” “Cherish the Day” “Like a Tattoo” “Is It a Crime” and “Kiss of Life”. Sade’s music comes off very relaxed and jazzy, being in genres such as soul, funk, and R&B. Some songs suggested would be “Siempre Hay Esperanza”, “Clean Heart”, “Nothing Can Come Between Us”, “Paradise”, and “Hang Onto Your Love”. The mood of these songs very relaxed and laid-back, a show which has somewhat similar tunes to Sade’s music is Sex and the City.
“Her album Love Deluxe was on repeat for such a long time during fall and winter of 2023 when I worked on robotics or homework, and there is so many great songs from that album that have just resonated with me. I really enjoy her vocals, she has a amazing range, and she uses it extremely well when she needs to be smooth or bold.” Junior Christian Garcia said.
Sade stands strong with many of the youth today not only because of her unique aesthetic, (including winged eyeliner/smoky eyes, dark red lips, slicked back hair/braided hair, gold hoops, rose colored blush, and an “effortless” sort of minimalist look) mystifying and inexplicable past, and a slow rise of jazz & soul into music. Hip hop & R&B artists are sampling older forms of jazz, classical music and soul, leading to a sort of revival for these more vintage forms of music.
Alongside musicians like Sade, Erykah Badu, Piero Piccioni, we have newer, more popular artists sampling (cutting clips from a specific song and reusing the beat or rhythm to rework into your own song) and reintroducing classics to younger generations. Some examples of this would be
- PinkPantheress sampling Michael Jackson, Selena
- Kendrick Lamar sampling Beach House, Janet Jackson, The Color Purple,
- Britney Spears sampling B-Boys, Elton John, Madonna
- BLACKPINK sampling 50 cent, Rihanna, The Notorious B.I.G.,
- Fairuz sampling Mozart
- Björk sampling Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Earth, Wind & Fire, Nine Inch Nails, and Clairo
- Kali Uchis sampling Crystal Waters, Duran Duran, Bob Marley and the Wailers
- Ke$ha sampling James Thornton, The Jacksons, Black Eyed Peas
- Nelly Furtado sampling Prince, A Tribe Called Quest
- Kanye West sampling 2PAC, Chaka Khan & OutKast, Luther Vandross;
Gen-Z and the further generation have been introduced to influential, diverse music through the art of sampling. Of course more niche/smaller artists such as belac, Nujabes, berlioz, ringsnot, Mong Tong, Snails House, Glass Beams, Melody’s Echo Chamber, and so much more help benefit the music blend of this time, demonstrating various new genres of music appearing due to inspiration from former genres. This is also due to the increased inclusion of black & various diverse artists from different ethnic backgrounds, and recognizing stolen art forms from POC, such as Elvis Presley stealing “Hound Dog” from Big Mama Thornton.
“Since then l’ve always used it as a “You got to get through it” coping mechanism and also an album to just even enjoy the current situation you’re in.” Garcia said.
Although it can apply to your favorite musician, sound is all around us. Sound is in our tone and pronunciation, the constant rhythm of the school bell, your alarm clock ringing in the morning. Music determines our personalities, & overall determines who we are.
