Junior Santana Casillas has been selected as the Unidos Games shirt design winner for this year’s event, taking place on April 30 at Burges High School. The Unidos Games is an EPISD event, similar to the Special Olympics, that marks inclusion, teamwork, and the hard work of students of all abilities.
“(It was) an honor,” Casillas said adding that this was something he’s always wanted to achieve.
For his design, he was inspired by pop culture, featuring a cougar that is both detailed and simple. His idea came together quickly, starting with a one-hour sketch followed by a full day of work to complete the final design.
More than just a design, Casillas hopes the shirt sends a message. He wanted people to recognize the students dedication to the games. Looking back, he said he might have changed the placement of “Team Franklin” on the shirt, but he is still really proud of the final result.
For future designers, Casillas offered this advice.
“Dream big,” Casillas said.
